Women produce half the world’s food, put in two-thirds of the world’s working hours, and yet make only 10 percent of the world’s income! That’s why women and girls are at the heart of ChildsLife community-based efforts.

The ChildsLife Vocational Centre was built and is now managed by ChildsLife and has been operating successfully for over five years since 2011. ChildsLife has a waiting list for girls who would love to go to school, but can't.

The Centre offers a range of courses such as hairdressing, tailoring, electrical installation and computer courses, etc. All designed to provide the student with the opportunity to either finding a job or setting up their own business. A scholarship costs € 540,- per student and pays for registration, materials, a school uniform and the National Kenya Exam.  

Why girls?
In the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, women bear the brunt of poverty. They are the last to eat and te first to keep home from school. For these girls a chance at a good future, without poverty, is very limited. Empowered women contribute to the health and productivity of whole families and communities, and are therefore key to reducing poverty.

The 75 students will be screened and selected in January and start their education in February.

NEDERLANDS | Studiebeurzen voor meisjes in Kenia – Op naar een toekomst zonder armoede

75 studiebeurzen voor meisjes van 16 – 22 jaar oud 

Specifiek voor meisjes die in de sloppenwijk opgroeien in een extreme achterstandssituatie is ChildsLife op zoek naar financiering voor studiebeurzen. Door hun situatie is het voor deze meisjes of hun ouders/verzorgers niet mogelijk het schoolgeld op te brengen. De ChildsLife beroepsopleiding in de sloppenwijk van Kibera is opgericht om jongeren in de sloppenwijk de kans te geven een beroep te leren. De beroepsopleiding is gebouwt door ChildsLife en sinds 2011 krijgen kansarme jongeren die opgroeien in Kibera de kans een vak te leren. ChildsLife heeft een wachtlijst met meisjes die dolgraag naar school zouden willen, maar niet kunnen.

Met name de opleidingen Basis Bedrijfsadministratie, Kleuteronderwijzeres en Coupeuse geeft hen goede kansen op werk en inkomen. Een studiebeurs kost € 540,- per studente en financiert de registratie, alle lesmaterialen, het schooluniform en examengeld voor het nationale Kenia examen.  

Waarom meisjes?
Vrouwen hebben vaak een sleutelrol als het gaat om de bestrijding van armoede. Als je een vrouw ondersteunt, help je daarmee tegelijk de productiviteit van hele families en gemeenschappen en kan de cyclus van armoede worden doorbroken. Daarom investeert ChildsLife in vrouwen en meisjes.

De 75 studentes worden in januari 2018 gescreend en geselecteerd en kunnen in februari starten met de opleiding
